Star Trails off Jupiter

Rode up to Jupiter to catch the Geminid meteor shower. We thought it would be dark enough to see, but there was just too much light pollution. So I merged all my images to make a star trail. I did see some meteors, drones and planes but did not capture any meteors streaks. This is a cleaned up image from all the planes and the drones.

Everglades Startrails

A late night at Harold A Campbell Public Use Area, we arrived about 12:30am and shot for a few hours to get this star-trail compilation. This shot consists of 100 images – 26 seconds each with loads of flying insects flying insects trying to get to our blood. We work netting around our heads thankfully because the buzz was non stop. These types of nightime photography in the swamps are challenging, any open skin is a target – even if you are wearing long sleeves these blood suckers will bite through, unless you spray your clothes with deet before you leave.

Night Photography & StarTrails over South Florida

Photos by Lee Smith

We had a clear night over South Florida and we headed out to a favorite spot out in the Everglades. The moon set at 3pm so we did not have to deal with moon light.  The stars were shining brightly and the wind was almost still. We put on bug spray and could still hear the buzzing of mosquitoes and got a few bites.

We set out cameras up to capture the stars and some star trails. Each star trail has about 120 image to make one photo. Each image is about 30 seconds and taken 1 second apart then stacked to create the star trails.

Star Trails in South Florida

We arrived about 20 minutes before sunset at Harold A Campbell Public Use Area. It is in Palm Beach County – out west. West of 27 by a 15 minute drive across a paved two lane highway. There are no street lights,  no road markings, but there is the Public Use Area where people can launch their small boats on the water and park. When the sun goes down, it gets dark – the only lights you see are from people and their cars. We saw fireflies around us, and on a night like this with clear skies and no moon – people setting up telescopes for viewing the night skies. Red lights are used to avoid issues with photography and you can see the light pollution on the horizons from the cities.
