A Lone Tree – Big Pine Key, Florida Keys

Just down the road from Bahia Honda is a small area with a great view. On this day it was cloudy but the tide was right and this one lone mangrove tree stood proudly on the shore of an old petrified mangrove/coral area.

Sunrise Deering Estate – 2331

Charles Deering lived on the 444 acres of property along Biscayne Bay from 1922 to 1927. The property consists of a three story wooden house built in 1900, the Richmond Cottage, and a three story stone mansion. The grounds are amazingly landscaped and offer a beautiful glimpse of the Florida’s past.

The grounds include what is thought to be the largest virgin coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the continental United States. There is also walkway through the Mangroves just north of the famous Palm Tree lined dock area that leads to The Cutler Burial Mound – a prehistoric mound on the Charles Deering Estate. It is one of the few surviving prehistoric mounds in Miami-Dade County.
